About us

Ambika, “mommy” or Mother of the World (in Sanskrit)
The Ambika association was initiated by three founding members who share common values and projects for the children of Saint Jude’s Foundling Home in Jhansi, in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

The Ambika association is the result of a dream cherished for years by the president of the association, Lucy Battù: to “return” with small gestures the love received from the nuns when she herself grew up in that orphanage.

Ambika is a not-for-profit association and operates in the field of cultural and educational activities for children.

Saint Jude’s Foundling Home in Jhansi was established and is run by the nuns of the Congregation of the Daughters of the Sacred Heart. The Congregation was found on Malta in 1903 by Maria Teresa Nuzzo (1851-1923) with the aim to provide education for poor girls. The first home abroad was opened in Jhansi in 1949. More houses followed in Italy (1952) and in Libya (1968).
Besides Malta and India, the Congregation is also present on the Philippines, in Kenya, the US and Tanzania.
